The true story of Catholic nun sister Juana Inés de la Cruz (1648-1695), one of Spanish literature's greatest poets, based upon the book by Nobel Prize winner Octavio Paz and her forbidden passion with the local Vicereine. She and her husband the viceroy find her brilliant and fascinating. La Virreina visits her often and inspires her to write passionate poetry that the archbishop finds scandalous. The viceroy protects her. After he is replaced and returns to Spain with his wife, Sor Juana faces envy and retribution. A bishop betrays her, her confessor humbles her. Plague, a tribunal, and her confession as "the worst of all" end the great poet's life. Although a Sapphic tendency is hinted here and there, there is no direct referral to lesbianism; in fact, there is no prove that Sor Juana was in fact a lesbian (although she might have been), despite her love poems to the Marquesa de Mancera, which should be explained as signs of devotion, a common practice at the time, rather than desire. The taglines on the dvd cover are therefore idiotic. Good acting and good direction and a close adherence to history make this film worthwhile.
