| The 28-year-old beautiful and successful medical surgeon Wil is falling in love with her boss's daughter, ballerina Vivian. Wil's traditionalist 48-year-old widowed mother, who only speaks Chinese, is kicked out of her home because she has brought shame to the family by becoming pregnant out of wedlock and wants to live with her daughter, who in her turn tries to hide her lesbian relationship. All in spite of cultural expectations, of course. The absence of stereotypes is refreshing and the acting and directing is good, which is uncommon for a lesbian themed film, especially since this is the first feature film of openly lesbian director Alice Wu. It's a smart and really funny romantic comedy with nice and interesting characters. |
