Mulholland Drive (US 2001; 149') . . . .
.
Style: Mystery thriller

A bright-eyed young actress named Betty travels to Hollywood, but finds herself in a dark conspiracy involving a woman named Rita who was nearly murdered and now has amnesia because of a car crash. Eventually, both women are pulled into a psychotic illusion involving a dangerous blue box, a director named Adam Kesher, and the mysterious night club Silencio. The two women soon discover that nothing is as it seems in the city of dreams. The "spontaneous" lesbian scene on the couch is memorable. The plot is discussed many times on many sites. Most agree that they don't understand the film, but fortunately in the case of Lynch (who one part of the people consider a genius and the other a pretentious windbag), complete understanding is not necessary to enjoy this, but concentration is (else you miss too many clues). The film was originally started as the pilot for a television series (like Twin Peaks), but the ABC-bosses didn't believe in it (which is an indication for Lynch's talent) and Lynch then decided to finish this story as a film (which explains the rather hasty end). European money was required to finish it, as ABC tried to end it prematurely.
