| Imagine if the way you learned about your history was by hearing an entire oral tradition of stories and personal experiences intermixed with facts and dates that, before now, were simply milestones from the history books. This is the ambitious intention of this documentary. Completed at the cusp of the new millennium, the film is a stream-of-consciousness history lesson from 100 lesbians of all sizes, classes, colors and ages, all telling their part of our collective history. From the early 1900s when women gained the right to vote, to our modern fight for marriage equality rights, this is a completely relevant and engaging history of the struggle for equal rights for women and lesbians. The women themselves are amazing. From a 92-year-old gentleman, to an ordained minister, to a young riot girl, we are given the chance to know, however briefly, a small slice of the diverse community of women who personify the word lesbian. By showing such a wide range of women, the film transforms the idea of what it means to look or act like a lesbian. This ultimate experience of seeing yourself reflected on screen, combined with the power of our her story and the future we ourselves are in the process of creating, makes this documentary as much an inspiration of where we are going as it is a document of how far we’ve come. |
