A young San Francisco architect escapes from her wimpy boyfriend (who is apparently involved with another woman) by escorting her auntie Foon, in fact her father's old servant, on a trip to China, where she has never been. Foon recalls the love she lost there 50 years before. In an attempt to escape an impending marriage to a man she didn't like, Foon joined a conventlike community of women called the Ji Sor and fell in love with the beautiful Wan. We learn, through a series of flashbacks, the sweet and tragic story of their blossoming romance and painful separation. The past collides with the present as Foon attempts to help Wai through the breakup of her tumultuous relationship while reliving the memory of her one true love. Beautifully shot and superbly acted, a passionate portrayal of female love.
