Style: Drama/romance
Director: Lisa Cholodenko
Main Cast: Radha Mitchell (Syd), Gabriel Mann (James), Charis Michelson (Debby), David Thornton (Harry), Anh Duong (Dominique), Ally Sheedy (Lucy), Patricia Clarkson (Greta), Bill Sage (Arnie)
Photographer Syd, wanting to complain about a leaky ceiling, gets to know her upstairs neighbor Lucy Berliner, a once acclaimed photographer, now a drug addict, who lives with her lovers Greta and Arnie. She feels attracted to her and her world and tries to convince her to work for the magazine that Syd works for. Cholodenko, in her first feature length film after making two shorts, uses the old lesbian commonplace self-destruction, which gave this film an unsatisfying ending. Currently she is known for portraying dysfunctional characters, of which there are enough in this dark film. Contains soft explicit lesbian lovemaking scenes.
