| Alice is married with the rich, handsome but boring Martin and has three lovely children and a nice house in an English village, discovered by Martin's mother Cecily. Martin starts flirting with rich neighbor daughter Clodagh, but she is more interested in his wife Alice, which is enough ammunition for village gossip. When Martin finds out the truth, he takes off to his parents, leaving Alice with the children, and her neighbor. A lesbian happy ending is however not expected, as Alice is forced to leave the hostile village, and Clodagh. A film with a nice atmosphere and beautiful portrayal of the British small town life. The unhappy ending however is a downer. The book is better, in which Alice asks martin for a divorce rather than a reconciliation as in the film. Sophie Ward, an out lesbian, is briefly seen topless when she kisses with Clodagh after a swim in the lake. |
