A Girl Thing is actually a 4-hour mini-series about New York therapist Beth Noonan, who receives one person, making up one story, per hour. Only the first story, named "It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing", is lesbian themed and stars Elle MacPherson, a lonely and insecure lawyer, who's not capable of maintaining a relationship. When Lauren goes on a double blind date with Bob and Frank, she finds herself strangely attracted to art designer Casey, who is Franks blind date, and utterly appalled by the horrendous Bob. Casey feels the same. They go out a few times, one time to a lesbian bar, where upon entering, Lauren says: "The Killing of Sister George" (hinting to the lesbian bar that's featured in that film), and have sex together. Casey's friend Sharon is supportive, but Lauren's friend Claire turns out to be a bigot, at least, for a while. In the end, Lauren, stating that she can't deal with society's judgment, breaks up with Casey, who confessed that she's a career bisexual, hinting that she might have had sex with dozens of women (if this were true, this would either make the curious and warm reactions of Sharon out of context, or Casey a brag, so it's more likely that she uses this story to get Lauren to find it more acceptable herself). Indeed, Lauren can't in fact deal with her own bias and even though she thoroughly enjoyed this relationship with Casey, she can't maintain this one, either. Dr. Noonan deducts that Lauren "really lived", at least for a while, and she hopes that there is no turning back for her. The title refers to both the jazz performance they go and see together as well as the "swing" in the relationship that Lauren experiences for the first time.
